​This style of art deeply connects with my Meditative, Mindful, and Mandala pieces, reflecting my unofficial Cherokee heritage. I carry a wealth of stories from my relatives, and it’s fascinating to realize that we share the same narratives, often without knowing each other. Tracing my Cherokee roots is particularly challenging due to the historical persecution the Cherokee ancestors faced; many chose to remain unregistered on government lists out of fear. I believe from what I have been told, my family history is a testament to this struggle from those stories.
Furthermore, a significant obstacle in tracing my family's heritage is the loss of my great-great-grandfather’s birth certificate, which was tragically destroyed in a courthouse fire. The name Moses Payne appears frequently in various records, complicating our search and making it challenging to confirm whether he was one of the Native Americans connected to that lineage. I want to make it clear that my intention in creating Native American nature art is to honor, not disrespect, my profound connection to this rich heritage. I feel a deep alignment with the Two-Spirit identity, and I was bestowed the name Raven in a dream. This experience resonates with me deeply, yet I continue to seek clarity on whether it reflects my own identity or that of my clan.
